Peer Support Services (PSP) in Aviation​

Peer support is a regulatory compliance requirement for pilots employed by European and UK based Commercial Air Transport operators*. In addition to this, it is rapidly becoming the benchmark for operators around the world who take the mental wellbeing of their safety critical teams seriously. Simply put, peer support programmes help mitigate the risks around welfare, safety, and efficiency of operations.

What is peer support?

Peer support is a structured process where trained individuals with similar experiences or backgrounds provide non-clinical, psychological support. This can help people to navigate the difficulties that they may encounter in work and in their personal life, whilst building trust and a supportive workplace culture.

 

The importance of wellbeing and its impact on safety is clearly evidenced in aviation. Peer support programmes have been in existence for many years, producing notable success in addressing:


  • Difficult personal events e.g. bereavement, relationship issues
  • Financial stresses
  • Post incident trauma
  • Substance and alcohol abuse
  • Performance related issues
